Why this work can’t wait

A study by Aga Khan University found that about 60% of sportswomen in East Africa have experienced or witnessed sexual and gender-based violence. Many never report it, because they fear what will happen next.

Iten is home to some of the fastest women in the world. It should also be one of the safest places for them. Tulizo exists to make that true: by talking openly, teaching early, and standing beside girls and women before harm happens.

Safe places to grow and run

Tulizo Foundation was started in Iten to tackle gender-based violence, gender inequality and the lack of safe, supportive spaces for women and girls. We work with girls and women at every stage of life, helping them build confidence, skills and a voice.

We combine sport, education, mentorship and community conversation, because lasting change needs all four. And we meet people where they already are: on the track, in classrooms and in the village.

Our visionA world where women and girls live with dignity, safety and equal opportunity.
Our missionTo empower women and girls through education, mentorship, sport, advocacy and community engagement.
Where we workIten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenya, and from 2027 Uasin Gishu County too.

Proud to partner with ASICS Foundation

Tulizo Foundation is an official partner of the ASICS Foundation, which uses sport as a tool for positive social change. We were named among the organizations in its 2026 Partnership Program.

Together we run school outreach, visit families at home and train young athletes and ambassadors, so that more girls grow up knowing their worth.

Good questions

What does GBV mean?

Gender-based violence is harm done to someone because of their gender. It includes physical, sexual, emotional and economic abuse. Our work helps communities spot it, talk about it and stop it.

Why use sport?

Sport brings people together without anyone feeling lectured. Running and training give girls confidence and a team, and the sessions afterwards make space for honest conversations.

Do boys and men take part?

Yes. Boys learn alongside girls in schools, and men join our community forums as allies. Change lasts when everyone is part of it.

How do I donate?
